Holiday Attire

It is the holidays, it is summer and it is getting hot.
So when I'm staying home I find myself being increasingly drawn to lightweight, baggy tops and leggings - perfect for lounging around in.

My recent interest in baggy shirts was sparked when I stumbled across this large old greyhound t-shirt in an op shop that says "greyhounds as pets" to add to my growing collection of animal rights t-shirts. I love old t-shirts and the way they make you feel so cosy!

At first I just thought I was being a dag, but then I realised that it is possible to be stylish & baggy too with the help of boy-friend tees and oversized printed shirts.
My mum recently found one of her old blouses floating around in one of our cubboards - floral with a sweet little frilly collar - and she gave it to me <3
This is what I wore yesterday...

Hoping your Sunday is sunny too!

Plastic Joy

Hello again! It seems I have been nominated for the Plastic Joy award by You've Got The Silver (thankyou!) by which I am required to share with you my top 5 film and TV heart throbs - no easy feat!

So lets see what we've got here...(they will probably be weird haha)

In no particular order...

1. Ben Whishaw as John Keats in Bright Star

This is the first film I ever saw Ben in believe it or not, and I instantly fell gut-wrenchingly in love with his John Keats. Perhaps this is because I have a thing for sensitive, skinny men - or perhaps it is just because he is amazing. I saw this film twice at the movies. Both times I was sobbing by the end and I hardly ever sob in films.

2. Casey Affeck as Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James

Once again like Ben Whishaw, Casey's performance as Robert Ford just blew me away. Sure, he is also exceptionally good looking in period costume but I think I also find troubled characters very alluring.

 3. Graham Garden from The Goodies

Ok. So I know this is funny (have blogged about this one before!) but I really do love him! His curly blond side burns, thick spectacles and long legs are just fantastic - and he makes me laugh - what more could you want in a man? hahaha

4. Mark Lee as Archie in Gallipoli

This one is a childhood crush. I saw Gallipoli when I was about eleven and Archie's innocent boyish charm charmed the wits out of me. Plus his character is so heroic and yes...ok...I did cry over this one too - but it is such a sad film!

5. Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain

I was trying to think of my favourite old movie guy...and I had to really think...but then I remembered Gene. Gene has to be one of the sexist dancers of all time. I mean this man can dance! I love how he can be funny and dance at the same time <3

Now it's your turn! I nominate:

Have fun!

Black Swan

Today is a national holiday in Australia and the day most Australian's celebrate 'Australia Day.'
However in recent years there has been growing awareness about the fact that the anniversary that this date commemorates is the day on which 'The First Fleet' set foot on this land and claimed it as a British colony.

Because of this, growing numbers of Australians are choosing to avoid celebrating 'Australia Day,' preferring to refer to it as Invasion Day or Survival Day. I am one of these. I believe it is wrong to celebrate the 'birth' of one nation and ignore the destruction of another.

In my attempt to ignore this holiday I went thrift shopping and saw Black Swan.
If I had to sum this film up I would describe it as a frenzy of anxiety, self harm and sadness.
Natalie Portman is definitely amazing in her role as Nina.

I was also astonished by how strongly it reminded me of the 1948 film The Red Shoes. You could almost call Black Swan a darker, modern adaptation of The Red Shoes.

If you haven't yet seen The Red Shoes, it is a MUST see!

Sunday Sunshine

Today I went to a picnic in the park.
The day was utterly beautiful, 29 degrees and blue skies.
We kicked off with some champagne at 10am and then ate our way into the afternoon. Of course we we not alone in our picnicing - there were lots of dogs, children and families enjoying the park with us.

I made mini vegan quiches and chocolate chip cookies. Others brought vegie sausage rolls, banana bread, mango chutney, hot crossed buns, fruit salad & sweet fruit bread to name a few...It was a yummy day.

I decided that I also wanted my outfit to be bright and sunny like a picnic and to me this meant 60s & 70s.
This is what I wore...

I thrifted this skirt last week from a country op shop - it comes as part of a suit ( I love the A line shape of it ) and the flower top is from a retro star sale, shoes from Sportsgirl.

Hope you also had a fabulous Sunday!

A little Friday encouragement

I was given these little cards as a birthday gift. They help me to feel optimistic.
These two in particular struck a chord this week...

Yesterday's Outfit: trying to colour my world

Yesterday I felt like overdosing in colourful florals and fifties charm and this is what I ended up with...

As always apologies for the poor quality!

Outfit: dress and bag - vintage, cardi and shoes - thrifted, socks and brooch were gifts.

And I snapped this picture last night. Couldn't resist!

Hope you're having a lovely week so far.

Style Crush: Marie Claire Feb

Garden colours, bird's nest beehives and penciled eyes:
I just love this new editorial in Marie Claire Australia- February.

I am always delighted to see how timeless and appealing the fashions of the 60s really were. They have constantly been re-appearing in contemporary fashion through out the 00's. And here they are again in 2011.

Cars and glamorous dresses: This shot reminds me of the Georgia Jagger Chanel campaign, from the last style crush.

Sunday dreaming

It is Sunday again. I am dreaming of sailing away from everyday life, to a place where it is always the weekend...

I really love this still from Brideshead Revisited.
It captures a moment of utter ontemplation and languor and makes it eternal.

Boating outfit

Today was so wonderfully sunny. Just glorious! Perfect Saturday weather. This finally gave me a chance to wear something summery after all this rain.

I have been craving nautical lately & then I found this hat the other day which was very lucky.

Hat, t-shirt and shorts thrifted - quite Venetian me thinks.

It rained and it poured

Apologies for the lack of posts in the past few days. I've had a pretty busy week. Yet so it seems have thousands of others, with massive floods engulfing two thirds of Queensland. Obviously this week has been devastating for many people who have lost their homes and possibly loved ones, and my thoughts and my thoughts go out to them.

I was due to fly up to Brisbane today but it seems my holiday has been postponed by the uncontrollable forces of nature. I am just so glad to know that friends up in Brisbane are safe and largely unaffected. I'd have to say that most of Australia is in shock at the moment. It just seems rather surreal as you never think these sorts of disasters will happen so close to home.

Hope you have a safe and happy weekend.

Sunday etsy collage: frill collar blouse

It's that precious (Sun)day again. A day that makes you want to laugh and cry all at once. It's the day of sleep-ins, hangovers, lazy brunches, shopping expeditions (student discount at Savers woo), baking and just doing all the things that you didn't get time to do during the week. It is also the day where work looms, peering darkly out at you from the edges of the calendar. But lets not think about that just now.

Today's collage features a pretty summer look sightly 70s slightly 80s. Blouses are all the rage with me at the moment so I couldn't resist putting this one in!

a denim skirt like this one or denim shorts are a simple and understated wardrobe staple
and these 70s sandals are perfect for summer.

Hope your Sunday is fabulous!

Dance dance dance to the radio

I've decided that from now on whenever I'm feeling down, or worried or stressed I'm just going to put a record on and dance it all away like know one's watching. Tried it last night after work and it worked a treat. One of the best stress relief remedies in my opinion!

Hope you're having a great weekend (and get a chance to do some dancing yourselves)!

I miss you kitten

Hello! I am back from my very short holiday.

While I was away I....
  • slept (yay!)
  • ate chocolate, lots of chocolate
  • made fashion collages
  • watched Julie & Julia (which was very up-beat and delightful) and Raging Bull (not so up-beat with lots of crazy wife beating, but the cinematography was amazing and Cathy Moriarty is stunning. I think she is my new girl crush) and this doco about photographer Anton Corbijn who directed Control (which I really must see!)
  • continued reading The Diamond As Big As The Ritz and this super awesome edition of Frankie magazine

Frankie had this section called 'The Year That's Been' or something like that where a bunch of variously famous people like Miff Warhurst, Sally Seltman and Karen Walker listed 20 things they did in 2010. It inspired me to try it myself. So here goes but I will indulge and do 21 for obvious reasons...

In 2010 I....
1. Learnt to love myself  2. One hearts with my baking skills (specifically vegan chocolate cup cakes, renamed "vegasims") 3. Was heart broken 4. Found true friendship 5. Wrote 10 or more? poems 6. Almost finished uni 7. Started taking yogalaties classes 8. Participated in the joys of email correspondence 9. Was inspired by The Runaways to embrace my inner 'girl power' 10. Turned 21, 11. Learnt to cook spontaneously with whatever is at hand 12. Got close to nature in Tasmania (slept under the stars and went skinny dipping) 13. Went to the Astor and saw Lolita, Freaks and The Red Shoes 14. Read The Bell Jar 15. Saw the play Much Ado About Nothing two times  and laughed my head off with C at a man doing air punches in the 2nd row 16. Sheepishly took part in a 'Free Hugs' stand at Flinders St Station 17. Had beer giggles and wore red, blue and white on 'French (Anna Karina) Day' with Char 18. Watched Char graduate 19. Learnt to make vegan cheesecake 20. Visited Edgar's Mission
21. Started a new blog

When you put it like that it seems incredible the amount achieved in a year. You should try it. It's a great way to reminisce and it makes you feel special.

In the meantime, my cat is not yet back from his undesired holiday at the cattery...you never realise how comforting the company of a pet is until they are not there.

I miss you kitten!

Hawaiian Holiday

Discovered this film today as I collapsed on the couch half asleep - wore myself out cleaning and wrapping presents and writing lists - sounds tough eh! It's called Gidget Goes Hawaiian from 1961. It's pretty cute. I really love her awesome bouffy ponytail hairdo. It also has two babin' love interests - Jeff who possesses a jewel of a voice and Eddie aka Mr quiff, can dance like Gene Kelly. Ain't that fine?

It was part of a series of films & I can imagine it being the big chick flick of the 60s. Here is a short song clip.
I'll be away for a few days, somewhere a bit quieter and with considerably less love interests than Hawaii!

See you on the other side.
