My weekend

I made it back from duck rescue. Thanks to all of you for your support and well wishes regarding this issue :) It was quite an experience - very surreal. This kind of contrast between the serene beauty of the wetlands at dawn and these terrible gut shots echoing all around you. It was also nice being around so many like minded people.

Unfortunately there was an accident on Saturday and one of our duck rescuers was shot in the face. Very shocking and scary - and it was all over the news. Luckily she was ok as the shot guns only scatter small pellets- just in shock as you can imagine. The media seems to have taken our side in this incident so hopefully this will increase the chances of having duck shooting banned. I also (like many people) got fined on Saturday (boo boo boo!) because what we were doing was illegal. And I nearly got fined again on Sunday except I ran like hell through the water and mud to get away from the officers!!

Anyway we managed to save some ducks but sadly alot of the injured ducks we did rescue died of shock soon afterwards. Also, because of heavy rainfall there were alot of baby ducks around and this meant that baby ducks were killed. Our rescuers collected their tiny bodies as evidence. Even if they weren't killed by bullets they will die of starvation if their mother's get shot.

Sorry to end on such a sour note. I promise future posts will be nice and positive!

Duck weekend

This weekend is the start of duck shooting season in Victoria and I am off to duck rescue! It will be my first time there. It basically involves the duck rescuers wading into the wetlands with wistles and bright coloured jackets and trying to scare the ducks away before they can be shot at and rescuaing injured ducks. I think it is going to be intense.

In the meantime, I hope you have a great weekend!

Black Swan

Today is a national holiday in Australia and the day most Australian's celebrate 'Australia Day.'
However in recent years there has been growing awareness about the fact that the anniversary that this date commemorates is the day on which 'The First Fleet' set foot on this land and claimed it as a British colony.

Because of this, growing numbers of Australians are choosing to avoid celebrating 'Australia Day,' preferring to refer to it as Invasion Day or Survival Day. I am one of these. I believe it is wrong to celebrate the 'birth' of one nation and ignore the destruction of another.

In my attempt to ignore this holiday I went thrift shopping and saw Black Swan.
If I had to sum this film up I would describe it as a frenzy of anxiety, self harm and sadness.
Natalie Portman is definitely amazing in her role as Nina.

I was also astonished by how strongly it reminded me of the 1948 film The Red Shoes. You could almost call Black Swan a darker, modern adaptation of The Red Shoes.

If you haven't yet seen The Red Shoes, it is a MUST see!

2011 is going to be Maxi

I went thrift shopping today...and I am yet to leave one of those places empty handed (not that I need more clothes). I found this really amazing maxi skirt - a 60s/70s staple I think - so I was very stoked. Can't wait to wear it over summer.

I have also been inspired to think about my three top new years resolutions by this blog post on Thrift Core.
These are my top three in no particular order:

1. Love and respect myself: I will stop comparing myself to others and believe in myself. I can do anything if I just believe I can. (oh gosh that sounds so daggy! But I believe it's true)

2. Think positively and fully appreciate life: I have come to realise that I should not waste precious energy worrying and dwelling on small troubles that befall me, because in the big scheme of things these are nothing compared to what other people are dealing with. I am healthy, living in a safe place, getting an education and financially secure, and I should not take this for granted.
I will be grateful for my life.

3. Consume less and more ethically: I will try to buy significantly less brand new products, I will buy organic foods, go dumpster diving (I know this sounds scary but my friends do it all the time and get some amazing stuff!), make more gifts instead of buying them, use recycled paper and consider where products have come from ie. sweat shops, places/procedures that use harmful chemicals or corrupt companies.

Phew. That was intense.
Now here is something a little lighter - a maxi skirt inspired polyvore set!

Also, here are clips from two must see films that made me think in 2010 - The Vanishing of The Bees and Food Inc.

Have a Happy New Year!
I hope 2011 is good to you.
