70s skirt 60s shirt

This is what I wore on Tuesday - Melbourne's big Cup Day horse racing holiday. However, because I dislike horse racing - as I do any other kind of animal abuse - I decided to dress in bright colours to stop myself getting too depressed about all the fuss.
It sort of worked.
I love this skirt because it sits really nice on, and I love love this shirt because it is an ascot tie and because it is orange and brown!
In other news:
  • I saw George Harrison: Living In A Material World and I loved it and it did not feel like 3+ hours to me.
  • I also finally started up a writing blog. I wrote an article about Vintage Shop Assistants and put it up there (I am slightly embarrassed about how angst ridden my writing is) but it's good to write to get stuff out of my system.

Hope you're doing well too.

About blogging, and giant babies

Hi, sorry I haven't been around for a while...I've been busy and lacking inspiration. I'm having a blogger dilemma. Perhaps more appropriately, I am suffering from a bad case of blog boredom. I am one of those people who follows many a famous, big hit fashion blog, but I have just about stopped reading all of them. There are a select number of blogs that I look for on my dashboard which I find interesting, funny, inspiring (you know who you are - if I am following you and you are not a 'world famous' blogger then don't worry, I like your blog!) but none of these top blogs are any of these things. All they are is hundreds of photos of themselves in vintage or more often pseudo vintage (my arch enemy) clothing, or photos of themselves and their boyfriends/husbands frolicking around on holidays, while we are constantly reminded about how wonderful their life is.
Thanks. I find this most interesting.

It is starting to drive me insane. I find that the blogging world suffers from a serious case of copy-cat syndrome. It is odd that 99% of these top bloggers some of whom have many hundreds or thousands of followers, most of the time dress in the same way and blog about things in the same manner, which is why it becomes boring if you are someone like me who looks for a unique voice/sense of style. I am not saying that just because your blog is highly popular that it is automatically bad, obviously people must start somewhere and perhaps some of the smaller blogs that I like will become famous in the future, but it does seem as though the blogging world, like the real world, highlights people who conform, not people who have the guts to be different.

So should we feel sad that only 5% of bloggers appreciate our blog? No, absolutely not.
Last year I was forced to take a compulsory class as part of my major, (which I despised at the time, but have since come to realise was more helpful than I ever thought it could be) where we looked at the philosophy of writing. Only one concept has stuck with me from this class, and that is Bourdieu's concept of 'art for art's sake'. In a nutshell, Bourdieu discusses the fact that 'high art' ie. modernist literature like Joyce's Ulysses is often unpopular or rejected by bourgeois society while it is bench marked by the elite as a seminal work of art and made as 'art for art's sake,' without economic gain. In contrast, things that are often popular amongst the status quo and hence economically successful are often seen to be crude or labelled as 'bad' art by the elite - the best example of this I think is Blockbuster Hollywood movies of today.

I think the analogy I am trying to make here is fairly obvious so I will leave it at that. But basically the purpose of this post is to say, I want to make my blogging more interesting, so I have decided to start a writing blog (I will probably keep posting on this one too) so I can write opinion articles about issues I find interesting, and begin my quest to improve my writing skills and enter the world of writing/publishing. This hasn't happened yet, but I hope to start it up soon. I've also posted the essay I wrote about Bourdieu's theory in relation to the 70s Punk movement as part of that class on a new page labelled Articles and Essays if you care to have a look.

In other news, Melbourne is currently full of giant reptile babies. I know, weird. It's for the annual Melbourne Festival. This is a picture of me in front of one baby. My friend S who took the photo says it looks like it is trying to do yoga.

Thanks for reading.

26 degrees and sunshine

Today I felt happy, which is odd because I spent the day at the library studying. I think it was a combination of the nice weather and the outfit. I think I've been doing too many particular looks lately and I needed a break. Sometimes it just feels good to wear something a bit strange or quirky and set yourself apart. You can't really see but I'm wearing this sweet pair of earrings made of little forks.

Outfit: top vintage, shorts thrifted, shoes Sportsgirl, earrings from Hunter Gatherer.

And even though today was so sunny I ended up being surprisingly productive, which is an exception for me lately! I got everything done in record time which meant I had time to go out and enjoy the sun for a bit. I also bought a new cd - Best Coast and I love it. The cat on the cd looks like my kitty.

As far as I can tell this song is about my cat....

Happy Friday x

Back to our old friend Red...

Went out for dinner last night to Moroccan Soup Bar, St Georges Rd Fitzroy. It was yummm. This is the outfit I wore. I changed about four times before I left the house in the morning! Nothing seemed right, until I put this baby on. It has been locked away in a drawer for about six months - this is the first time I have worn it. But I am now in love!

It has tiny white polka dots over it and these beautiful frills on the collar and cuffs though, unfortunately these photos don't do it justice.

Hope your having a great week.

Sunshine. Blues.

Today it is raining like a proper winter day in Melbourne and I am feeling a tad under the weather; two good excuses to stay indoors and blog. In winter I like rain and cold, I even harbour secret desires to move to London and spend my days traversing the concrete in black victorian boots, woolen over coats and tartan scarves. But as it happens it is supposed to be summer here at the moment and I was rather enjoying the unusually mild, sunny sping days we've been having.

Brisbane, aside from the weather, remainds me alot of London for some reason. I think it is the wide river, and the open scale view you get of the city from the water.

Here are a few holiday snaps from my Brisbane holiday, at the Southbank galleries...

This is the shift dress I mentioned in the previous post.

Inside GOMA.

Rivane Neuenschwander’s interactive installation, I wish your wish at GOMA.

(Thankyou to Char for taking these nice outfit pics!)

I also made a new friend while I was there...

Hope you have a nice Sunday.

Sunday Sunshine

Today I went to a picnic in the park.
The day was utterly beautiful, 29 degrees and blue skies.
We kicked off with some champagne at 10am and then ate our way into the afternoon. Of course we we not alone in our picnicing - there were lots of dogs, children and families enjoying the park with us.

I made mini vegan quiches and chocolate chip cookies. Others brought vegie sausage rolls, banana bread, mango chutney, hot crossed buns, fruit salad & sweet fruit bread to name a few...It was a yummy day.

I decided that I also wanted my outfit to be bright and sunny like a picnic and to me this meant 60s & 70s.
This is what I wore...

I thrifted this skirt last week from a country op shop - it comes as part of a suit ( I love the A line shape of it ) and the flower top is from a retro star sale, shoes from Sportsgirl.

Hope you also had a fabulous Sunday!

Someone has a very important message for you

My (beautiful) friend Char and I discovered this on the back of a bathroom door today.

What a wonderful project!
