2011 is going to be Maxi

I went thrift shopping today...and I am yet to leave one of those places empty handed (not that I need more clothes). I found this really amazing maxi skirt - a 60s/70s staple I think - so I was very stoked. Can't wait to wear it over summer.

I have also been inspired to think about my three top new years resolutions by this blog post on Thrift Core.
These are my top three in no particular order:

1. Love and respect myself: I will stop comparing myself to others and believe in myself. I can do anything if I just believe I can. (oh gosh that sounds so daggy! But I believe it's true)

2. Think positively and fully appreciate life: I have come to realise that I should not waste precious energy worrying and dwelling on small troubles that befall me, because in the big scheme of things these are nothing compared to what other people are dealing with. I am healthy, living in a safe place, getting an education and financially secure, and I should not take this for granted.
I will be grateful for my life.

3. Consume less and more ethically: I will try to buy significantly less brand new products, I will buy organic foods, go dumpster diving (I know this sounds scary but my friends do it all the time and get some amazing stuff!), make more gifts instead of buying them, use recycled paper and consider where products have come from ie. sweat shops, places/procedures that use harmful chemicals or corrupt companies.

Phew. That was intense.
Now here is something a little lighter - a maxi skirt inspired polyvore set!

Also, here are clips from two must see films that made me think in 2010 - The Vanishing of The Bees and Food Inc.

Have a Happy New Year!
I hope 2011 is good to you.

Style Crush: Georgia Jagger for Chanel

Every time I open a magazine and see these pictures I fall more and more in love with them. I'm not usually a huge fan of Chanel - I usually find the styling too dark, tweedy and 'classic' for my liking - however I am impressed that they have taken the plunge and gone with a slightly more vivacious face for the new collection. It's about time Chanel left the thirties and forties and hit the 60s! (I'm sure I will piss off a number of devoted Chanel fans by saying this - Charlotte?!)

Anyhoo...I really love Georgia's style because she looks like such a classic 60s/70s style icon with her long blond locks. Ironically I think she has a touch of Marianne Faithfull in her...because that's not a bit weird!

Bring back the high waisted jeans I say!
I also really love the mustard yellow/brown colour scheme in these three outfits.

I think this one's pretty cool too because it has the classic Chanel black and white detailing and yet still manages to achieve a kind of long 60s maxi dress feel.

Ah I love crochet dresses! Don't suppose they'd be terribly comfortable to wear though...
And gosh can you believe, only two more sleeps till 2011! Scary.

A thrifty wonderful idea: Project Re-Style

Just found out about this great project called Retro Restyle. A New Years resolution idea made by Rachel and Elsie which involves helping the environment & having fun by revamping damaged or unwanted goods. They are encouraging everyone to join them in their endeavors. You can read more about it and how to join in here.

I would definitely like to give it a shot. As a thrifter I regularly come across beautiful old items that are a bit worse for wear and I usually just pass them by. I'd love to revamp some old clothing!!

I shall be contemplating....

Today more red...

Today my day comprised of:
  • wearing lipstick
  • shopping (I bought An Education, a tre inspiring film which I have been meaning to watch again for aggges)
  • eating cherries
  • sewing (I started sewing my mum a new apron with some - yes red! - retro fabric I found in an op shop recently...which I have been meaning to do for ages!)
  • eating mango
  • doing things that I have been meaning to do for ages
  • eating more cherries
  • & thinking - always a good past time
I have been thinking about all the things I want to do lately, and there are many! I have been feeling very inspired, perhaps it is because I have started a new blog? and reading lots of other people's lovely blogs? or perhaps it is simply being on holidays and having unlimited 'me' time. I woke up in the early hours of the morning, well actually my cat woke me up scratching at my door and I suddenly had all these idea's floating through my head, like short stories I should write, and blog posts...I was particularly taken by the question of my style and why I love old clothes so much.

I love dressing up in vintage or second hand clothing. Every day I wake up and think about what I am going to wear according to my mood. I suppose reading fashion blogs has made me aware that some bloggers have one particular style that they love to death - 50s is very popular- and they do that style every day. I am much more mood orientated with my style, I love to wear different era's of style - 60s and 70s are my favourites, but occasionally I do like to do 50s and even more occasionally 80s.

I suppose dressing up just allows me to express my mood on the outside.

Today I was inspired to go slightly 50s in style after reading Johanna's blog.

I love these jeans, & wear them often. In winter I like to wear them with converse sneakers for a bit of a tom-boy look, but on warm days like today I can wear them with espadrilles making the jeans look more feminine.

I have been thinking about altering this white blouse by cutting it shorter at the back & two ties at the front. I think that would look so cute for summer...something like Marilyn.

So young!

Sunday etsy collage: red red red

I have decided to make this a regular segment cause I just love browsing etsy too much.
This week is a sweet little nautical set...

nautical collars like this never seem to go out of fashion;

I seem to be developing a bit of a fetish for vintage clasp handbags like this, they are very elegant,

and finally these little beauties!

The holly and the ivy

dress, boots & cardi thrifted, brooch was a gift from little sis <3

Had a nice quiet day eating homemade veganified recipes & generally just being a blob.
It was nice to have an excuse to wear lots of red again.
Hope your's was swell too!

Upside down girl

Today has been cleaning day, which also inevitably = grumpy day, though one upside of cleaning is it does allow for some serious music listening.

Here are a couple of tunes I have been listening to on my cleaning day...

Sea of love

Graeme Gardening

I just finished watching a Goodies episode and have come to the conclusion after much deliberation, that I have a raging crush on Graeme Garden (definately the sexiest mouse) on the left.

Those side burns just drive me wild...hahaha. No but really.

Does anyone else see this? Or am I on my own? I just love The Goodies because they're so daggy and boyish and make this classic, now outdated, 70s style of slap stick comedy. Plus they always have amazing outfits and props.

Ironically, here is a cowboy spoof clip:

A post about toilets

This is going to sound rather odd but...well about a month ago I had to use the loos at Melbourne Central ....What is so special about this you ask? Well I was dazzled, dazzled to discover that they had been re-furbished and that some genius of a designer had decided to wallpaper the sink wall with retro dress patterns. I know! Shut up!

Why didn't I think of that I thought!? Why didn't we all!

I must admit it was rather strange, taking photos in a loo I waited until no one was looking and then -bam! I had to share my delight with the world.

Thank-you world, for making retro toilets!

Stella McCartney: Spring RTW

Today's outfit: Penelope ruffles

This is what I wore out today. I found this lovely lace blouse in an op-shop last week (note little badge-george on my right breast hahaha) pared with this green mini and riding boots, also thrifted last week.
Hmmm. This picture says to me "clean your room," eek.
But I do find that thrifting is a much more worthwhile distraction.
Perhaps good thrift finds come in t(h)rees....sorry, sooo bad!

Mini addiction

Last week I picked up a sweet little navy mini from the op-shop and it has since fuelled a raging mini-skirt obsession. I think this is due to the versatility of the mini-skirt in summer and winter with tights...and the fact that they go with shirts and tees and boots and sandals and, and, well you can see for yourself!

Three 60s/ 70s inspired polyvore sets featuring said mini-skirt:

Holiday-making

Today I was in town and dropped by the local zine store to make some badges as a Christmas present for my sister. She is 15 and in love with Jared Leto: painful I know but what can one do? I did one with his mo-hawk profile (which I sheepishly confess I actually think looked good) and some band logos. While I was there I also made myself a couple of George badges & bought this curious little zine.

George, you shall go everywhere with me!
There's nothing like beloved badges and zines to kick start the summer :-)

Retro Love

This blog is just an excuse for me to muse on my favourite styles.
There will not be alot of writing, but thats unimportant because a picture says a thousand words.
My personal style is largely influenced by the past, mostly 60s and 70s. I like punk, I like hippies, I like mods and I like to conglomerate different styles and eras. I believe high waisted is the only way to go, that vinyl records are one of the coolest inventions ever to grace the earth and that all the best music comes from the past.

I dress in a feminine but not girly manner, and oddly enough, alot of my inspiration comes from male styles, ie. 1950s jeans&t-shirt rockers, the Ramones, the Clash, the Beatles are big inspiration. When it comes to women my favourite style icons include Joan Jett, Edie Sedgwick, Anna Karina, topless hippies, Patti Smith, Iris from Taxi Driver, Joni Mitchell and Penelope Tree.

Undoubtably this blog will also feature alot of retro tunes.
