1960s eye make-up

The other night I was feeling really bored so I decided to try doing some Penelope Tree style eye make-up to pass the time.

This is how it turned out (the images are bad quality phone photos sorry!) I have tried doing 60s make-up before and hadn't been entirely happy with the turn out, but this time I think I figured it out. You have to space the liquid eyeliner bottom lash strokes quite far apart for it to show up from a distance...and because my eyes are deep set I have to make the strokes quite long.

Maximum Summer

I have been admiring the idea of wearing a 70s maxi skirt this summer. Though unfortunately and strangely I find genuine 70s clothing to be hard to come by. Maxi skirts in particular are hard to find, and are often very pricey when you do find a nice one. The other thing about genuine 70s maxi's is they are often made from heavy synthetic materials and sometimes even quilting (like to find on an old bed spread!) so not so handy for the hot 30 + summer days.

But it is still possible to find amazing 70s dress patterns round and about...so I had the idea that maybe I could make my own - if I could just find a big enough reel of lightweight retro fabric. So this I've decided will be my summer project!

I always love looking at 70s dress patterns, it's like candy for my eyes. Everything is so colourful, flattering and modern in a nice way (ie. you could still wear a lot of these styles today and be considered fashionable but not minimalist like half the fashion designs you see modelled today).

Slip Inside This House

One of the things I've been enjoying lately has been finding pictures of 60s and 70s house interiors. Many people nowadays consider 60s and 70s housing designs to be gaudy, dark and outdated. Sure - they were often quite dark or decorated with bright, clashing colours and contrasts of light and dark. But my love of things from this era doesn't stop at clothing, and I kind of like the gaudy colours!

My grandparents used to live in a house made in the 70s so perhaps in a way, 70s decor reminds me of them a little. Their house had wooden ceilings and doorways, green bench tops and black kitchen tiles.

I also have this strange obsession with 60s and 70s lighting - or the way artificial light seems to have a different hue in 60s/70s photographs and television than it does today. You can definitely see this in these photos! Technology from this era was often more visually pleasing to the eye also in my opinion. The plastics, heavy rugs, velvets and synthetic materials...the list lovable features is endless.

Here is a collection of some interiors that I think are rather awesome:

Orange, such a great colour. No shortage of it here.

Lovely golden couches and wood paneled walls. May I join you?

How do you put all this into words?!

My personal favourite. Look at those chairs and the bed!

Psychedelic Moves: Edie Sedgwick Dancing

Beautiful compilation footage of Edie Sedgwick dancing by Miapink on youtube - dubbed to the haunting psychedelic sounds of the Crystal Stilts.
Just entrancing to watch. What beautiful moves she had.

70s skirt 60s shirt

This is what I wore on Tuesday - Melbourne's big Cup Day horse racing holiday. However, because I dislike horse racing - as I do any other kind of animal abuse - I decided to dress in bright colours to stop myself getting too depressed about all the fuss.
It sort of worked.
I love this skirt because it sits really nice on, and I love love this shirt because it is an ascot tie and because it is orange and brown!
In other news:
  • I saw George Harrison: Living In A Material World and I loved it and it did not feel like 3+ hours to me.
  • I also finally started up a writing blog. I wrote an article about Vintage Shop Assistants and put it up there (I am slightly embarrassed about how angst ridden my writing is) but it's good to write to get stuff out of my system.

Hope you're doing well too.
