Back to our old friend Red...

Went out for dinner last night to Moroccan Soup Bar, St Georges Rd Fitzroy. It was yummm. This is the outfit I wore. I changed about four times before I left the house in the morning! Nothing seemed right, until I put this baby on. It has been locked away in a drawer for about six months - this is the first time I have worn it. But I am now in love!

It has tiny white polka dots over it and these beautiful frills on the collar and cuffs though, unfortunately these photos don't do it justice.

Hope your having a great week.

Dreams and realities

As I'm sure you may have noticed I've been feeling a little bit angsty lately. Not in a bad way - my life definitely isn't falling to pieces, in fact I feel like I am in a good place in my life. It is more a kind of restless angst, expectant and suspicious of things to come.

I have met quite a few new people lately, which is great (I am only just beginning to get over my shyness at 21!) all of which are nice and some of which are of the opposite sex. I find this slightly unsettling because at the start of the year I finally managed to shake off my desire for a 'man' and appreciate being independent. So essentially as soon as I stop looking for love fate presents me with a platter of nice guys. I have also grown to be instinctively suspicious of happiness.

I guess I try and combat this feeling of suspicious instability by:
a. listening to angry girl music haha
and
b. dressing with my foot in two doors - feminine and tomboy - ie. I like to wear short skirts with clumpy riding boots, or florals with bow ties...
and
c. sometimes writing poetry

I suppose the most important thing to remember is that, no matter what happens (nothing may happen or everything may happen) is to love yourself and be true to your own desires.

Here is a song from my favourite teenage go-to angsty band: The Ramones - 'Needles and Pins'

Hope you're having a fun week.

"The reason you're around is because you're unhappy..."

Today I came across a red and black horizontal stripe, turtle neck, long sleaved leotard in a Salvos store. I very nearly bought it, but decided against it at the last minute. I think if it had been black and not turtle neck I would have got it. I think it would be fun to dress up like Edie Sedgwick one day and just dance around the house in a leotard and tights and massive silver earrings!

She is just my favourite style icon.

Yet more angsty girl music

I'm really digging P J at the moment.

My weekend

I made it back from duck rescue. Thanks to all of you for your support and well wishes regarding this issue :) It was quite an experience - very surreal. This kind of contrast between the serene beauty of the wetlands at dawn and these terrible gut shots echoing all around you. It was also nice being around so many like minded people.

Unfortunately there was an accident on Saturday and one of our duck rescuers was shot in the face. Very shocking and scary - and it was all over the news. Luckily she was ok as the shot guns only scatter small pellets- just in shock as you can imagine. The media seems to have taken our side in this incident so hopefully this will increase the chances of having duck shooting banned. I also (like many people) got fined on Saturday (boo boo boo!) because what we were doing was illegal. And I nearly got fined again on Sunday except I ran like hell through the water and mud to get away from the officers!!

Anyway we managed to save some ducks but sadly alot of the injured ducks we did rescue died of shock soon afterwards. Also, because of heavy rainfall there were alot of baby ducks around and this meant that baby ducks were killed. Our rescuers collected their tiny bodies as evidence. Even if they weren't killed by bullets they will die of starvation if their mother's get shot.

Sorry to end on such a sour note. I promise future posts will be nice and positive!

Duck weekend

This weekend is the start of duck shooting season in Victoria and I am off to duck rescue! It will be my first time there. It basically involves the duck rescuers wading into the wetlands with wistles and bright coloured jackets and trying to scare the ducks away before they can be shot at and rescuaing injured ducks. I think it is going to be intense.

In the meantime, I hope you have a great weekend!

Really loving this song at the moment.

Angst, irony, empowerment, this song says it all.

Red and Black

This is what I wore today, one of the tartan skirts I blogged about a couple of weeks ago.
It was pretty fun to wear. Very swishy and short and.....swishy!

Red is also my favourite colour and I always feel good in it!

Outfit: T-shirt and boots thrifted, skirt vintage, necklace (is my mums!), George Harrison badge made.

Have a nice Thursday.

Sunday Outfit: Maxi dress

Today I felt like wearing something beautiful, so I pulled out this stunning maxi dress I got from a thrift store about a month ago. Honestly, I cannot express how much I love this dress!

I think the colours are great together and the shape is very flattering. I would call it "70s doing Victorian."
I feel like a jazzed up olden day lady.

It wasn't until I bought this dress that I realised how many maxi dresses I now have. Even though I don't wear them often, I find them irresistibly delightful. I now have eight retro maxi dresses in my closet. I am becoming a maxi dress hoarder! One of them is a 70s wedding dress which my friend C talked me into trying on - and when it fit perfectly I couldn't go home without it! I'll have to show you that one in a future post!

Hope you've had a lovely weekend!

I've been feeling a little bit down and uninspired this week and I'm looking foward to the weekend.
In the meantime I think a little bit of style inspiration would be nice...

Boots, boot, boots I love beatles boots

So many beautiful patterns

Purple, paisley and daisy chains <3

From the highlands to the lowlands

Today I went op shopping at some places I'd never been to before and came home with a few new items. One of them (my favourite) was a below the knee length tartan skirt. To me it is gorgeous - it is a small tartan with narrow pleats and two very nice buckles on the left hip. On Monday I also stumbled upon a beautiful little red, pleated 60s-like tartan mini that fit perfectly. So this week has turned out to be very tartan indeed.

Here is a little collection of favourite tartan moments that will inspire my own tartan outfits...

Faux fur

Today's outfit: thrifted faux fur jacket and boots, vintage dress.

Today I was still feeling a little bit sick so I decided to wear something that was sure to keep me nice and warm. I had my first week of classes this week and have been silently pitying all the little firsts years in their low quality sweat shop clothing. It's only in the past year as I've stopped buying brand new clothing, that I've felt truly happy. I don't feel guilty about spending money anymore because second hand is cheaper, one of a kind, boycotting cheap labour and preventing waste. And that's not even including how fun thrift shopping is!

Not that I was a perfect first yr. I wasn't. I think everyone is trying to shake off their high school years and find themselves in first yr uni. It's just a shame that kids feel so hung up about 'trends' and 'fads' and 'fitting in'.
Uni, I've thankfully discovered, is about being whoever you want to be.

Being a vegan, I always feel a little apprehensive about wearing faux fur in case someone thinks it's real so I usually attach this little badge to the collar or my bag just to be safe.

 Hope your Thursday was rad!

Oscar needs a new dress

Over the past few years I have found myself becoming increasingly dissatisfied and bored with the Oscar red carpet fashions. I think this is partly due to my taste becoming more individual and to the fact that the fashions have stayed largely the same for the past ten years. When I say 'the same' I mean, "Dear god! Not another tight fitting/bodysuit-esque sequined dress that fans out into a predictable V shape!"

Arrrrrrghhhh!

It seems to me that when choosing an Oscar dress one is required to channel the wisdom of someone like Goldilocks. One cannot go too boring...

Exhibit A

but nor can one go too 'ugly'

Exhibit B

(I do like her music, but not this dress!)

It has to be just right! Don't I just sound so NW/Who trashy magazine editor with my scathing analysis haha!

As you may have realised, boring fashion brings out the mega-bitch in me....
This granted, if I ever had the misfortune to be invited to the Oscars, I would like to wear something like this just to show them how much I hate their uncharacteristic glamour...

 (image: Coco Avant Chanel)
I think my desire for simplicity and quirky details at the Oscars relates a lot to the story of Coco Chanel.

I'd love to see the reaction on everyone's faces as I swaggered down the red carpet in my tweed trousers!
Do you have an Oscar fantasy?

p.s I'm happy Colin Firth  and The Kings Speech won. This man and this film are just the best!
